- International expansion in billion-dollar orthodontics market
- Pioneering medtech products thanks to nanotechnology
- Patented polymer composite wire offers unique selling proposition
Frankfurt am Main / Singapore – April 19th, 2010 – By launching two products on the markets in Singapore and the US at the same time, Nanostart holding BioMers pursues its goal of expanding into international markets through its incomparable innovation.
The two products launched included a fully translucent braces system for one and the world’s first coloured retainer for another. Both products are unique and designed to replace conventional metal wire.
The global market volume for arch wire, brackets and retainers (fixed braces applied after treatment) is currently around USD 2.4 billion annually. The US orthodontics market has grown by around 7.5 percent p.a. over the last nine years, and various regions in Asia have shown growth in the double digits.
BioMers’ product development is based on its patented nanotechnology-based polymer wire. It is the first translucent non-metallic wire in the world for use in orthodontics. BioMers’ polymer wire is comparable to conventional metal wire in terms of mechanical features.
BioMers presented both new products at the International Dental Exhibition and Meeting from April 16 to April 18 in Singapore and will also attend the American Association of Orthodontists’ Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. from May 1 to May 4. The entry of the German market is planned for the third quarter of 2010. The Nanostart Singapore Early Stage Venture Fund managed by Nanostart Asia holds around 16.5 percent of BioMers’ shares.
The two new products are the SimpliClear™ braces system and the coloured ASTICS® Color Retainer. The SimpliClear™ braces system is practically invisible. With this system, patients can undergo orthodontic treatment without having to wear unsightly metal braces. Both the brackets and the trademarked arch wire are translucent in the SimpliClear™ braces system. Although the development of translucent braces began 30 years go with translucent brackets, SimpliClear™ is the first overall solution with satisfactory functionality.
SimpliClear™ is currently available as SimpliClear™ Express, a practically invisible braces system for patients with slightly crooked teeth. This can be used to shorten the treatment much more than the conventional, more complicated dental treatment. According to BioMers’ estimates, SimpliClear™ Express should be suitable for treating around 20 percent of orthodontic patients. SimpliClear™ for use in more complicated dental treatment should be available at a later point in time.
The second new BioMers product is the coloured ASTICS® Color Retainer, designed to delight retainer wearers and supplement the nearly invisible ASTICS® Clear Retainer.
Subsequent to orthodontic treatment, retainers play an important role in keeping the teeth in position by affixing them to a bracket. The ASTICS® Color Retainer from BioMers is designed to give patients, young and old, the opportunity to replace their metal retainer with another coloured blue, green or pink. The ASTICS® Retainer is composed of the same revolutionary material used to make the orthodontic wire in SimpliClear™.
Dr. Mervyn Fathianathan, CEO of BioMers, made the comment, “We are extremely pleased! SimpliClear™ Express represents a new, affordable and aesthetic possibility for patients without compromising at all on functionality. Patients can wear coloured wire as a fashion accessory and choose the colour to fit their personality.”
About BioMers:
BioMers is engaged in the design and manufacture of novel polymer composite based products for biomedical applications. The intellectual property underlying the BioMers products are protected through patents that have been issued in the major countries of the world. While orthodontics is the immediate application area, dentistry and the medical field are also application targets for this innovative and patented technology. Using its patented polymer composite fabrication technology, BioMers has developed the world's only translucent orthodontic wires. Application of the wires in currently available brackets and retainers provides orthodontic patients with completely translucent braces and retainers. This alleviates the aesthetic concerns of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Future application areas of the fabrication technology include other dental specialties and medicine.
