Frankfurt am Main - Nanostart AG invests in the American NaturalNano Inc. The company has its headquarters in Rochester, New York State, and is active in the field of nanomaterials. NaturalNano is specialized in discovering, refining and commercializing naturally occurring nanoscale materials.
The company has developed a processing and classification technology for extracting, isolating and classifying naturally occurring nanomaterials, such as nanotubes found in Halloysite clay.
Halloysite nanotubes are tiny tubes with a diameter of less than 100 nanometers. These naturally occurring nanotubes were formed in the earth over millions of years and display remarkable qualities. Their unique geometry enables them to be used for storing, delivering and controlling the release of various chemicals and materials, making possible a wide range of commercial applications.
Thanks to their unique qualities, the nanotubes can be used in a vast range of areas, including highly-developed polymers and plastics, cosmetics and other personal care products, absorbents, and in the electronics industries. Nanotubes are suited, for example, for absorbing and specifically delivering chemicals or perfume. All in all, NaturalNano has identified more than 200 applications. NaturalNano also taps other income sources by issuing licenses on its processes.
By using a newly-developed process – several patents have already been registered - NaturalNano plans to select from the natural nanotubes those of high quality which can be commercially exploited. Dimensions to be achieved lie in the ton scale. NaturalNano came a good step closer to this goal in the beginning of 2005 when a contract was signed with Atlas Mines (Utah), the owners of one of the world’s biggest Halloysite sources for a strategic partnership and the supply of more than 500 tons of Halloysite.
